Fountains and Monuments in the public space of the city of Turin

Digitization and enhancement of urban heritage

Within the framework of Spoke 6, Fondazione 1563 is implementing the project “Monuments and fountains in the public space of the city of Turin. Assets located outdoors: definition of management protocols for planned conservation.” The project aims to define a planned conservation and coordinated, continuous maintenance plan for outdoor assets, and to develop an operational management protocol. This protocol, in addition to addressing the conservation needs of these assets, meets the public administration’s requirement for new sustainable and effectively practical management and organizational tools. The goal is to promote technological and disciplinary development in the conservation sector, supporting the transition from emergency-triggered interventions to the application of conservation plans based on predictive analysis strategies and long-term programming. This triggers a virtuous cycle of inspection-monitoring-intervention, leading to the agile management of cultural heritage.

Main objectives

  • Developing a preventive management protocol for city monuments and fountains, in collaboration with Fondazione 1563 and the La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Center;

  • Creating a prototype of the aforementioned protocol for four monuments and one fountain in Turin;

  • Implementing the digitization of historical, technical, and iconographic data, creating an accessible archive with cartographic visualization and three-dimensional modeling tools.

Contribution to planning and enhancement

The project offers a concrete support tool for the planning and management of the city’s artistic heritage. Thanks to the cartographic component and access to digitized technical data, it is possible to perform analyses, inspections, and planning using a single integrated tool.

Innovation elements

The project introduces a structured and digitized system for the management of the city’s monumental heritage, based on a consistent and replicable census methodology. The adoption of GIS tools and a georeferenced database allows for the integration of historical, technical, and photographic data into a single infrastructure, improving information quality and traceability. Systematic digitization facilitates monitoring, planned maintenance, and intervention scheduling, allowing technicians and relevant offices to quickly access updated and geolocated data sheets. The information-based approach represents a significant step toward more efficient, scalable, and data-driven management of urban heritage.
