Vessel Density Maps
Over the past few years, we have been analysing AIS (Automatic Identification System) and Port Call data to track the evolution of container ship routes and to represent maritime traffic trends at different temporal and geographic scales with the production of vessel density maps for RoRo (ferry) and container ship routes for a detailed analysis of maritime transport, ports, logistics and their impact on economic processes, to support SRM – Studi e Ricerche per il Mezzogiorno (Studies and Research for Southern Italy Centre) and its Maritime Economy Observatory about global maritime trade evolution.
Our role has been fundamental in the drafting of interdisciplinary dossiers whose task has been to describe present and future prospects of maritime transport in Mediterranean sea and in the rest of the world.
SRM publishes the “Italian Maritime Economy” Annual Report which brings together the most significant analyses by the Observatory during the year – including the maps produced by Ithaca – together with a focus on Mediterranean trends in the global maritime scenario.
