OVERWATCH

OVERWATCH is a European project created to improve the management of emergency events through the integration of advanced technologies such as Earth observation via satellite and drone, GNSS geolocation, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality. The goal is to provide those operating in crisis situations with a more effective tool to collect, interpret, and rapidly share data, thereby supporting the decision-making process and the coordination of field operations.

The project is funded under the Horizon Europe program. It is coordinated by Ithaca and involves 10 European partners from 5 countries, with a total of approximately 40 researchers involved.

How it works

OVERWATCH is based on a digital platform that manages the entire lifecycle of data useful during an emergency: from collection (via satellite, drone, or other sensors) to harmonization and standardization, up to analysis and transformation into value-added information.

The system consists of three main subsystems:

Backend management and geospatial repository,

for data organization and sharing;

Terrain mapping via drones (RPAS),

to obtain updated and detailed imagery of the affected areas;

Holographic map in augmented reality,

allowing for a three-dimensional visualization of the operational context.

Immersive experience for a faster response

One of the most innovative aspects of OVERWATCH is the use of Augmented Reality: rescuers can view holograms of buildings, obstacles, vehicles, or risk areas projected directly onto their field of vision, featuring georeferenced information updated in real time. This allows for a more immediate and shared understanding of the operational scenario, reducing response times and increasing operational safety.

Artificial intelligence helps to rapidly process large volumes of data, while the Earth observation component enables monitoring the evolution of events in near-real-time.

Towards more accessible and operational tools

OVERWATCH represents a significant step toward more accessible and effective digital tools for emergency management. It combines applied research and technological development with the goal of creating an integrated system, ready to be tested and used by operators and institutions involved in natural disaster response.
