HVT – Heatmaps Visualization Tool
HVT is a feasibility study that explores new methods for mapping urban heat islands by leveraging multisensor geospatial data. The project integrates open-source satellite imagery and thermal data acquired through aerial thermography.
The final result will be a WebGIS platform prototype capable of delivering processed data in an intuitive and interactive way, facilitating comparative analysis and the evaluation of different sources. The project focuses on a real-world pilot case: the Municipality of Settimo Torinese, in Piedmont.

Identifying urban heat islands for more resilient planning
HVT aims to support adaptive urban planning through tools capable of:
-
Identifying and analyzing urban heat islands using advanced technologies;
-
Providing concrete support for urban planning decisions focused on climate resilience;
-
Increasing local awareness of the effects of rising temperatures in densely built-up areas.
How it will contribute to planning
-
Detailed mapping of urban heat islands and comparison between different detection technologies;
-
Development of a WebGIS prototype for consulting outputs;
-
Creation of a functional mockup that simulates future usage scenarios and paves the way for potential operational developments.
Ithaca leads project activities related to data integration, the development of the WebGIS prototype, and the comparison of mapping methodologies.
Innovation elements
HVT introduces an integrated and comparative approach to urban heat island analysis, combining:
-
Multisensor data (satellite and aerial remote sensing) to identify critical urban areas with greater precision;
-
Accessible digital tools, featuring an intuitive WebGIS platform that is replicable in other territorial contexts;
-
Active stakeholder engagement, focusing on the needs of end users such as local administrations and land-use technicians, to ensure the prototype’s practical utility.
