Piedmont Cycle Routes – Mapping for sustainable cycle tourism

Promoting cycling tourism through digital and printed tools

The “Ciclovie del Piemonte” project has created an interactive Web-GIS platform and a printed tourist map dedicated to the region’s cycling paths. The goal is to promote sustainable and accessible tourism, highlighting itineraries, services, points of interest, and technical information. The platform allows users to explore 12 main cycling routes with detailed fact sheets and specific maps, and it is optimized for use on both desktop computers and mobile devices.

The project was commissioned by Visit Piemonte Scrl, an in-house company owned by the Piedmont Region and Unioncamere Piemonte, with the aim of enhancing and promoting the regional territory.

Web-GIS and tourist map

The developed solution combines an interactive digital map and a printed map, both dedicated to cycle tourism itineraries. The digital platform offers maps with clickable routes, descriptive sheets, and directions to points of interest along the paths. The printed map provides an overview of Piedmont’s cycling routes, facilitating orientation and trip planning even in the absence of internet connectivity.

Improved accessibility and usability

Key results include the online publication of the Web-GIS platform and the printing of 3,000 copies of the tourist map. The modular structure of the Web-GIS allows for the future addition of new routes and information layers, as well as the reuse of the infrastructure for related thematic projects.

Synergy between digital and physical ("phygital" approach)

The innovative element of the project is the integration of digital and paper tools, defined as a “phygital” approach(physical + digital). This allows for reaching a wider audience, including both digital users and traditional tourists, and ensures information continuity before, during, and after the visit, even in areas with limited connection.

Additional notes – Impacts and collaborations

The project has also strengthened institutional visibility and consolidated relationships with strategic regional bodies, contributing to the development of outdoor tourism in Piedmont.
