ALIANTE – Advanced Digital Atlas of Italian Cities

A digital atlas to interpret the city: through history, risks, and the future ALIANTE is a project funded by the European Union under the NRRP – CHANGES program, aimed at creating a prototype of a multiscale and interactive digital urban atlas. The pilot case focuses on the city of Turin, where a WebGIS platform collects, integrates, and visualizes historical, cultural, environmental, and risk-related data. The goal is to provide an open and accessible information tool that allows for the interpretation of complex urban heritage while supporting sustainable and informed decision-making.

A geospatial and participatory atlas

The ALIANTE WebGIS platform makes it possible to:

  • Collect and manage multidisciplinary georeferenced data;

  • Enhance the historical and cultural stratification of the city;

  • Visually and accessibly represent urban risks and vulnerabilities;

  • Offer an interactive and user-friendly interface for users with different levels of expertise: citizens, technicians, and administrators.

The system is designed to be extensible to the entire city of Turin and replicable in other Italian cities.

Expected results – A prototype WebGIS for the city of Turin

The first version of the atlas will be dedicated to a significant portion of the Turin area, integrating various types of data (historical, cultural, environmental, and risk-related). The objective is to demonstrate the model’s effectiveness, test its scalability, and lay the groundwork for a full urban extension and future adoption on a national scale.

Interoperability, continuous updates, and FAIR standards

The strengths of the ALIANTE project include:

  • Interoperability with existing systems and databases (such as MuseoTorino or ICCD);

  • Dynamic integration of data from heterogeneous sources;

  • Adoption of FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and Open Science;

  • Digital sustainability, thanks to an open, communicative, and constantly updatable infrastructure.

ALIANTE thus serves as a strategic tool for the holistic and resilient management of historic cities.
